Paul Jones. from my book Bridge house Canning town

Paul told me later that he had seen the name, Old Man Going Downhill Blues Band, advertised in the Melody Maker and just had to come down to the gig. So the ads help get artists into the pub as well as audiences. Paul would turn up at all the blues sessions in the next few months so I got talking to him. He would never sing, only play the harp. Of course he was a singer and every one wanted him to sing. He said it wasn’t his gig, so in I go. Why don’t you get your own guys together and I will give you a gig. He wasn’t sure, he would think about it. His wife at this time was a very successful author. I could see that Paul wanted to get back into music and, I am only guessing, no way did his wife want him to, although she came to the gigs with him. They later divorced. Paul is now backing in music, remarried to a very good actress and is on BBC radio 2 every Thursday, playing the blues.

A week or so later he comes down to the pub and introduces Tom McGuiness, the guitarist who he was in Manfred’s band with. Tom formed McGuiness and Flint and was successful, with many hit singles but this was now over. Paul said he’s got a band together, for a definite one off gig. Tom was adamant, one only. The gig turned out sensational, the pub was packed and buzzing with excitement. Paul, Tom, Hughie Flint, Dave Kelly, Gary Fletcher, the Blues Band was Formed.
