Mods Mondays in 1979, who can forget them.
Culminating in the seminal Mods Mayday, when Canning Town roundabout was heaving with scooters all day long and well into the night.

But who was the best?
It's up to you!

Hi Jeff,

That's some visual you create at Canning Town Roundabout! Cheesy

Secret Affair I felt were the top mod dogs, but there's a great list there to choose from.

Was it busy all day for the gig? As with the lp were SA the last band on that nite?

Great forum by the way!

The best night down the bridge was the night the Purple hearts played down there and we danced so hard the floor colapsed    Willy

It was supposed to be an evening gig, but by 10 in the morning there were 100's of mods and scooters as well as the other bands playing.

We tried at first to keep everyone outside until the evening because there was no staff, but it was impossible so people were let in during the day while the other bands were recording.

There were so many mods and scooters hanging around outside that the law turned up to see what the problem was.

SA were the last band on to record their set. They must have been on about 9/10pm as things were running a bit late.

Hi Willy.
Yes it was a great gig,I wanted The Purple Hearts to be on the Mods mayday 79 Album,But they got book into the music Machine, on the same night. When the floor nearly collapse was one of the nightmares of my pub life,My son Lloyd had gone down the cellar to change a beer barrell,he ran up and told me,I was standing with Gary Bushell, I said come and see whats happening,Well the Floor had come away from the side of the wall,it was going up and down, against the same wall as the Gas and Electric Pipes,
which would had broke if the floor had completely collapsed,That would have caused a massive explosion.we wedge loads of doors to prop it up,we had to cut the gig short, no oncore because all you guys would not stop dancing.Regards Terry M

we still do not know who the other mods are on there vespas, ? please inform us, i want to include them in a book i have wrote.

we know Robert S Lee on his Vespa 150 super because he is on the front cover of the MODS MAYDAY 79 ABUM
that we recorded and started the new Mods Revival.

I have just a few remaining  original mods mayday 79 cds available, you can buy them for £4.00 each this includes PP,what a deal, when these are sold thats it .like the bridge house Pub, gone,

What happened at the Bridge involving The Mods (the band) and the audience? I recall being told there was trouble?

was any trouble at any of the other mod bands gigs there?

All the best

Hi Adrian, the mods were the only Mod band to cause trouble, fighting trouble that is,with the audience, there were 2 bands on,can not remember who was headlining,
i dought if they would row with there own fans,so that must have caused the trouble with the others, do you remember seeing the Mods, this was not on the mod recording night,so it must have been later,if you did what did you think of them, for mods i think they were a bit punky, 1 of the other mod bands took me to court, and they had a record deal, another one sent me a lawyers letter, good old days.my favourites was , not telling you. clue, opposite of big Time?

we will be reorganising the forum soon,
and the only dissapointment is with the Mods
in the Mods Poll just 4 people have voted.
out of 365 viewers,
Adrian and Willy have kept the flag flying,
Modern world promised to send a picture which never arrived.
Nobody has told us who the other guys on there moped are, these were taken on Mods Mayday 1979 when we recorded the Album.come on you guys and girls,it was a great night when we recorded  the Album and started a new mod revival again, I know we are all older , but please do not let the Mod movement Die,as it did in the sixties.
should we forget the Mods and have a Rockers page, thats up to you.

I think that the so called MOD's Revival in the late 70's was just a half hearted affair. I was in Birmingham at that time and if the London scene was anything like Birmingham the revival was doomed to failure.

Believe it or not, but I was a fully fledged MOD in the 60's. Vespa Scooter, 12 Mohair Suits (all different colours), Parka's from the Army and Navy store, and of course, THE ATTITUDE.

Ride down to Brighton in a pack, Get drunk on Lager and Lime, Cause Havoc with the locals, and if you were lucky, get into a brawl with the Rockers. Even got arrested a few times. But, as in the early 80's the scene faded, we all grew up a bit.

As for me, I looked at the music scene and became more intrigued with Rock and The Blues. I started to appreciate the musicians for thier mature taste and the ability to play the instrument of thier choosing masterfully. That was when I did a complete turnaround with my musical preferences. As you know, You allowed me to become involved in The Bridge.

After leaving London I became very heavily involved with numerous local bands and many on the National and World Wide level. Even went on a few country wide tours in addition to a few trips to Europe.

In my mind, maturing, and making the musical choice taste that I made was one of the best decisions of my life. But, as we all get older, and I'm damned old, it is good to look back on one's life and memories......................

Hi Colin, that was a really good page about your mod days,i never answer straight away, i was hoping we would get some response from some of the mod movement, but alas no, it seems the Mods has gone away
and died in peace, what a shame, as you said we all get old,and can not be bothered anymore, this must be the case with the mods of 1979. Mods Mayday 79 what a great night that was.you know Colin we are selling the original recording didgitlly remaster on to CD format + a Merton Parkas 7" single for £8.00.and we have not sold any at all since Xmas. So i am selling the remaining CDs.by auction soon on E.Bay,i only have about 50 left, so the highest bidder will get them, for about £100.00
we can then move on,to bigger and better bands.

As much as I would like to see a rockers page I strongly suspect that I'd be the only one! I think I was in the Bridgehouse most nights from 75 to 77 and always wearing my leather jacket. The first leather I had was pretty much covered in studs and badges and probably weighed more than I did back then but I know for a fact that I couldn't get into it now Wink I still ride a bike, a Suzuki GSX1400, but it's just a toy for sunny Sundays and I definitely wouldn't class myself as a biker these days.
I think it was the summer of 76 that saw the downstairs bar packed full of bikers every Friday but out of the many I knew most of them I've lost contact with, sadly it seems that I only see them at funerals now.
